Open Day in the Press and on the Web

The PRBB Open Day has been a great success once again!

Thank you for all the energy and time dedicated, it would have been impossible without the 100+ volunteers that shared their time and energy on Saturday to get Science and Society a bit closer!

But it was also really important to get the word around so that people could come. This year there was even more people talking about the Open Day during end of September - beguinning of October, so we are trying to gather in a list all those websites, blogs and general press that either announced the PRBB Open Day, or commented on it after visiting us on Saturday.

October 3rd, PRBB Open Day: Are you going to miss it?

The PRBB Open Day, organized by Science Meets Society with the support of the PRBB and the institutions within it, is above all a great big party that allows people from the general public to talk directly with young researchers. Many of you were here last year, but for those who haven't experienced the atmosphere yet, make sure you come on Saturday and bring along your family, friends, neighbours... anyone who might be interested in seeing where you work, finding out about research at the PRBB, watching the short plays by PRBB members, or just feel like fiddling with little experiments they can do at the workshops!

3 de Octubre, Jornada de Puertas Abiertas del PRBB: ¿Te lo vas a perder?

La Jornada de Puertas Abiertas del PRBB, organizada por Science Meets Society con el apoyo del PRBB y las instituciones en él alojadas, es ante todo una gran fiesta donde los ciudadanos de la calle pueden conocer y hablar con jóvenes investigadores. Muchos de vosotros estuvisteis el año pasado, pero si te lo perdiste entonces asegúrate de venir este sábado con tu familia, amigos, vecinos... cualquiera a quien le interesaría ver dónde trabajas, enterarse de qué investigamos en el PRBB o simplemente quiera liarse a hacer experimentos sencillos en los talleres y casetas.

Viendo las imágenes de arriba, de la jornada de puertas abiertas del año pasado, os podéis hacer una idea del ambiente que hubo ;-)

Have you suddenly realised you are free on Saturday and you would love to show kids how to make little fossils out of pasta, explain how to play computer games related to evolution, act as a fantastic guide for the tours round the labs and building or simply take a shift at the information point?

No problem, you won't be left out! Just sign in at our doodle with your name, email and choices in shifts and activities!

We have loads of volunteers already signed up, but we're still looking for people to help at the Open Day, specially for the experiments and guided tours! -the more volunteers, the lighter the shifts shall be ;-)

Only one week to go! PRBB Open Day '09

We are almost ready for the Open Day.

Since the Volunteer's Happy Hour, we have recruited quite a few new volunteers -why not give us a hand? it's fun, it's promoting Science, it gives you good karma!

If you haven't joined yet, you can still do so,
choosing shifts and activities at this Doodle chart.

If you're already with us, why not tell your friends to come along? the more they help, the less hours you my need to ;-) We'd love to get loads of people doing shortish shifts, and possibly moving from one activity to another during the day so as not to get bored with one single dedication all day long. It would also be nice to get enough shifts so we can enjoy the proper lunch we seem to have ahead of us this year, not just sandwiches!

Happy hour for Open Day volunteers today!

Open Day '09 is really close, it seems it can be really fantastic, with last year's experience ansd some extra cash for the Darwin eshibition, etc. All we need is to know who is willing, dying to come and help on October 3rd! We've got a Doodle where you can jot down your name, surname and e-mail, and choose the activities and shifts you would like to do. Or you could come along today, September 17th at 5:30 pm, and meet some of the organization members at the first floor terrace, and then decide on your favourite activity!

Come along to the Open day Volunteers Happy Hour today, at 5:30 pm, and you shall hear about the different things we need help with so you may find a shift and activity you'd love to volunteer for!


El Open Day '09 ya está muy cerca, y parece que puede salir algo fantástico con la experiencia del año pasado y algún dinerillo extra para la exposición Darwin, etc. Ahora sólo nos falta saber quién estaría encantado, quién se muere de ganas por echar una mano el 3 de octubre! Hay un Doodle donde apuntarte con tu nombre y apellido, e-mail y actividad + horario en que te gustaría colaborar. O te puedes pasar hoy, 17 de Septiembre a las 5:30 de la tarde, charlas con algunos de los organizadores en la terraza del auditorio, y entonces decidir cuál es tu actividad favorita!

Pásate por la Happy Hour para voluntarios hoy, a las cinco y media, y te contaremos todas las actividades previstas y qué necesitamos de los nuevos voluntarios, y probablemente encuentres un turno y actividad que te encanten ;-)

New Café Científico: Science & Science-Fiction -Where's the limit?

Science and Science Fiction. Where is the limit?

Is working on a scientific project like living in a Science Fiction novel ? Is reality larger than fiction? Are there scientific projects that owe to proposals of fiction novels? Is teletransportation possible? Will the solution to everything be in a pill?

This Scientific Cafe will try to find similarities and differences between two disciplines that see science from different points of view.

Current research can often seem science fiction and the stories of Sci-Fi may, in a near future, become reality. With the help of our speakers we will discuss about the creative mechanisms that both writers and researchers use to bring up their projects. Also, we will analyze the role of science fiction as a tool of scientific divulgation and we will find out if the real science and science fiction evolve in a parallel way.

The guests shall be:

- Miquel Barceló. Dept. Llenguatges i Sistemes Informàtics, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). Science fiction author, editor and translator.
- Luis Serrano. Programa Biologia de Sistemes. Subdirector of the Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG).

New Scientific Cafe: From cells to facebook

We have a new Scientific cafe for tomorrow, and again with a really interestic topic:


Do living creatures and social networks evolve in the same way? Does evolving mean becoming more complex? Do only living beings evolve? What is still in use from Darwin's research? How do researchers investigate evolution nowadays?

The invited speakers shall be:

• Juli Peretó. Biochemical and Molecular Biology Dept., Institut Cavanilles de Biodiversitat i Biologia Evolutiva. Universitat de València.

New Cafe Cientifico this Wednesday!

Café Científico is back, and this time at a really spectacular building! We shall be holding the scientific discussion at La Pedrera, one of Gaudí's buildings on Passeig de Gràcia.

You shall have the chance to discuss our genome, which genetic differences there are between a human and a fly, and many other questions with Jaume Bertranpetit and Juan Valcárcel on Wednesday, 6th.

As usual, there shall be drinks and some snacks during the event. You are invited to bring along any friends who may be interested!!

By the way, it was also at La Pedrera where some SmS volunteers bring the Genographic project to the Fira Recerca en Directe on April 15th & 16th. Besides presenting the project and introducing young students and general public to the PRBB, we had a chance to invite people to visit us at the forthcoming Open Day and to tell them a bit about Science Meets Society ;-)
