October 1: Open Day'11!!!

Tomorrow!! Mañana!! Demà!!

 Un año más, Science Meets Society abre las puertas del PRBB a una jornada de talleres, visitas, charlas y fiesta de la ciencia!

Este grupo de voluntarios, en colaboración con el Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona y las instituciones que alberga, lleva cuatro años promocionando la ciencia entre adultos y niños. Entre 100 y 150 investigadores y personal de los centros de investigación del PRBB se ofrecen como voluntarios para hacer posible el Open Day. El programa de este año es el siguiente:

Punto de información

En la plaza Darwin habrá un punto de información sobre las actividades del día y sobre el trabajo que se hace en el PRBB. A partir de las 10:00h se harán las inscripciones a las visitas guiadas.

Talleres y experimentos

En las carpas instaladas en la Plaça Darwin podréis participar en experimentos preparados especialmente para a la Jornada de Puertas Abiertas:

• Construye ADN con "chuches"!
• Mira por el microscopio
• Extrae tu propio ADN
• Pulseras con código genético
• La leche mágica
• La Prevención en el laboratorio
• Cálculo del riesgo cardiovascular
• Experimentos para hacer en casa

Visitas guiadas durante todo el día

Síguenos a través de los pasillos y laboratorios, de la mano de los investigadores del PRBB que te mostrarán y te explicarán cuál es su trabajo. Será necesaria inscripción, por orden de llegada el mismo día 1, en el punto de información.

La zona Chill Out de la ciencia! Relájate y disfruta de documentales para todas las edades, seleccionados por los jóvenes científicos del PRBB.

Rincón del lector

Disfruta de un espacio de lectura con libros de ciencia para todas las edades, cedidos por la Biblioteca Sagrada Família.

El tema  de este año ha sido la biologia de la memoria: obra escrita y obra gráfica. Entrega de premis de esta tercera edición.

Open Day 2011: Volunteering for what? · Voluntaris per a què?

The Open Day is approaching and we need you to help make it true... but how can you help?

• Information office at the Darwin square: Helping with registrations for the guided visits and informing the public about the different activities.
• Experiments at the Charles Darwin square: You will learn some very easy experiments beforehand and help the visitors do them: DNA isolation, magic milk...
• A station on the guided visits: You can explain your lab or one of the facilities of the park.
• Guided Visits: You can be one of the two guides of a group of 20 visitors, and accompany them along the defined route.
• Volunteers’ reception: You need to receive the volunteers as they arrive and give them the “volunteer kit” (water, food tickets, T-shirts...) and help organizing them.
• General organization: We need people who can help with any of several things: giving support to a specific group of volunteers, establishing shifts for lunch, helping visitors with mobility issues who need lifts, organizing the lines for entering the building, introducing the different shows and activities, and a many other small and big things which appear as we go.
• Languages: The official language of the Open Day is Catalan, but It is not necessary to speak Catalan or Spanish for a variety of tasks.

S'apropa l'Open Day '11 i et necessitem per fer-ho possible... però com pots ajudar?

• Caseta d’informació a la plaça Charles Darwin: Fent inscripcions per a les visites guiades i informant al públic de les activitats.
• Experiments a la Plaça Charles Darwin: Aprendràs uns quants experiments senzills i els faràs amb els nens: ADN amb xuxes, llet màgica...
• Estació en el recorregut de les visites guiades: explicant el teu labo o una instal.lació del parc
• Visites guiades: pots fer de guia de les visites guiades acompanyant grups de 20 visitants per les diferents instal.lacions en recorreguts fixats.
• Acollida voluntaris: cal rebre als voluntari que vagin arribant i facilitar-los el “kit del voluntari” (aigua, tiquets menjars, samarreta...). També s’han d’anar equilibrant els diferents espais segons els voluntaris que hi hagi.
• Organització general: es necessita gent que pugui ajudar en coses diverses, reforçar un grup de voluntaris, establint torns per menjar, atendre els visitants amb problemes de mobilitat que necessiten ascensors, organitzar les cues d’entrada a l’edifici, donar pas als diferents espectacles i activitats, i un llarg etc. de petites i grans coses que van sortint.
• Rotació de tasques: Intentarem que ningú estigui més de dues hores seguides en el mateix lloc i fent el mateix, a no ser que ho demaneu expressament.

Open Day 2011

Just a short update so you know that

• It's hot, people are on holiday, but we'll be back, and
• We are already working on this year's Open Day!

So don't fear the recession has got rid of Science meets Society,  we'll be back after summer!

Scientific Cafe: the immune system

We are holding a new scientific cafe next week, this time on the Immune System. Once again, it shall be at the Carmelitas Restaurant.

The immune system: when is it protecting us and when is it attacking? is the motto for this new session. Questions we are preparing are such as:

• What are allergies?
• What is immunotherapy?
• Should we get vaccinated against everything?
• What are autoimmune diseases? How and why do they appear?

Dr. Miguel López-Botet, Director of the IMIM (Hospital del Mar Research Institute), Dr. Dolores Jaraquemada, from the Immunology unit at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, and Dr. Manuel Juan, from the Immunology Service at the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona shall share with us their views and discuss with the audience all these subjects.

Scientific Cafe: Are you looking after your heart?

After the winter break, we are back with a new cafe at a new location: this season the restaurant Carmelitas (C/Doctor Dou, 1) is collaborating with Science Meets Society by hosting the next Scientific Cafes.

• How can we detect Cardiovascular Risk?
• Do cardiovascular illnesses have a genetic background?
• How does smoking, your diet or your environment affect your heart?

Dr. Jaume Marrugat, Director of the Cardiovascular and Inflammatory Processes Program at IMIM, Dr. Maribel Covas, coordinator of IMIM's Group of Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition, and Dr. Teresa Padron, researcher at the Proteomics and Cardiovascular Disease Markers  Group at the Catalan Institut of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICCC) shall share with us their views and discuss with the audience all these subjects.
