New Cafe Cientifico this Wednesday!

Café Científico is back, and this time at a really spectacular building! We shall be holding the scientific discussion at La Pedrera, one of Gaudí's buildings on Passeig de Gràcia.

You shall have the chance to discuss our genome, which genetic differences there are between a human and a fly, and many other questions with Jaume Bertranpetit and Juan Valcárcel on Wednesday, 6th.

As usual, there shall be drinks and some snacks during the event. You are invited to bring along any friends who may be interested!!

By the way, it was also at La Pedrera where some SmS volunteers bring the Genographic project to the Fira Recerca en Directe on April 15th & 16th. Besides presenting the project and introducing young students and general public to the PRBB, we had a chance to invite people to visit us at the forthcoming Open Day and to tell them a bit about Science Meets Society ;-)

Spanish population is becoming more interested in Science

According to the IV Encuesta Nacional de Percepción Social de la Ciencia y la Tecnología 2008 survey cited in this article at El País, Spanish population is becoming more itnerested in science, compared to the survey carried out in 2006. This is great news for all the groups working on disseminating Science in Society.

According to this survey, youngsters between 15 and 24 years of age are the most interested in Science and technology, Catalonia being the autonomous community with the highest rate of interest in these subjects.

The people interviewed in this occasion think that TV, press and radio don't dedicate enough time to talk about science, so probably this is the reason why the various scientific activities open to general public tend to have such a good acceptance. You shall find more information on the results of this survey at the website of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, FECYT, where they have published the resuts and have downloadable PDFs with extra info.

I hope this shall give us even more energy to work on the next series of Scientific Cafes and on the Open Day, wich are already being organized!

Happy Darwin Day!

Today is Darwin Day!!

And yes, we all know by now this is Darwin Year as we shall celebrate the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species, his most famous and influential work.

Some of the SmS members started working last year on the possibility of celebrating a darwin Day, with an exhibition on the man himself, his famous voyage on the HMS Beagle, and his theories. Eventually this has become a joint celebration together with the Open Day, so it seems we shall have a great Open Day this summer with a strong Darwin flavour.

So far, we are still working on the specific areas of the Darwin Exhibition and how to give a Darwin coat to the rest of activities. Roni and her team are thinking of evolution-oriented experiments, there shall be Evolution-related projections, there probably be a play based on Darwin and the cafe Cientifico shall also be related to Darwinism and/or evolution... but we are still working on it all, so any ideas shall be welcome!

And if you want to go through all his works, they are available online at The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online. And if you're affraid you won't have time to read it all in one go, why not suscribe to an e-mail per day with the book divided into 205 installments from Daily Lit?

New Cafe Cientifico next Monday: Addictions

We are presenting a new Café Científico on Monday, 19.01.09 at 7:30pm, at the same place as last month: the cafe at the Centre Cívic Sant Agustí.

This time we shall talk about drugs: what do they do to you, how much is too much, addiction and so on. The speakers shall be Silvia Mondon, psichiatrist at the Hospital Clinic, and Rafael Maldonado, researcher at Pompeu Fabra university.

Next cafe Cientifico: "Fecundación in vitro"

We are presenting the next Café Científico at a new location: Centre Cívic Sant Agustí. This is really close to the Borne, easy to find -check the map!

We shall have two interesting guest speakers: Anna Veiga, Director of the Cel Lines Bank, and Maria Casado, Director of the Bioethics Observatory at Barcelona University.

This shall be on Thursday, December 18th, at 19:30h -please come a bit earlier to make sure you have a seat!
