Who is SmS?

Science Meets Society (SmS) started off as a group of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers at the CRG (Center for Genomic Regulation) and grew until it was decided to extend it as a global project involving researchers and workers in general from several institutions within PRBB (Parc de Recerca Biomedica de Barcelona).

Our goal is to combine social life with scientific endeavour and to promote science communication and dissemination. In this sense, SMS supports initiatives of motivated members of the PRBB to pursue their ideas and carry out projects related to science communication and the perception of science in society.

So far our main action has been the implementation of three highly successful Scientific Cafes. As immediate plans, we are currently finalizing preparations for the Open Day, and we are organizing a creative writing contest, a series of short documentaries and other major event to celebrate the year of Charles Darwin, in February, 2009.

Science Meets Society has so far over 80 external volunteers to help us carry out the Open Day. These volunteers are all workers at the many centers and institutions in the PRBB.
